How overweight fees work
The overweight fee is added on top of the normal checked bag fee, per bag and per direction. A 60 lb bag on a round trip can cost the bag fee twice plus the overweight fee twice.
How to avoid it
Weigh your bag at home with a luggage scale, move heavy items into your carry-on, or split the load into two bags. A second bag often costs less than an overweight fee.
