Standard checked bag size
The standard checked bag limit is 62 linear inches, or 158 cm, measured as length + width + height. A 27 in suitcase of about 27 × 19 × 11 in adds up to 57 in and fits comfortably. A 30 in large suitcase is often right at the limit.
Checked bag weight limit
In economy the usual limit is 50 lb (23 kg) per bag. Bags between 51 and 70 lb (32 kg) pay an overweight fee, and most airlines refuse bags over 70 lb.
How to choose a size
For a weekend, a carry-on is enough. For a week, a medium 24 to 26 in bag. For two weeks or more, a large 28 to 30 in bag, but watch the 50 lb limit because large bags fill up fast.
